Creative texture on 8 shafts

This Creative Texture Weaving workshop with Charlotte Grierson will be held at Cockpit in Deptford.  It is suitable for early stage weavers as well as more experienced weavers. It will focus on exploring many different ways of creating texture, rather than pattern, on 8 shafts looms.

You will learn in a small group, exploring ideas and possibilities for creating textures. To begin with we will discuss yarn qualities and characteristics, and then things you need to consider when working with particular yarns.  

You can create in many ways; for example:

• through using textured yarns in the warp and weft
• by the use of structures and combinations of structures
• through the use of high twist and stretch yarns
• through considering the shrinkage of yarns during finishing
• through cramming and spacing yarns in the warp 

Working on looms set up with a range of different warps, you will try out weave structures and techniques using a variety of yarns to create textures.

You will have a wide range of yarns to choose from for wefts, so that you can see the different effects that you can achieve. You will have handouts with weave structures to support you to try and suggestions relating to the different looms set up.

At the end of the session we will evaluate the samples you have woven to understand what you have achieved and identify other possibilities and opportunities you could explore.

You will take home:

• handouts
• your own notes and paperwork
• samples you have woven.

All materials are included.

Sat 5th & Sun 6th October 2024

Thurs 10th & Fri 11th October 2024

Times: 10am-4.30pm

Location: Cockpit, 18-22 Creekside, Deptford SE8 3DZ.

Charlotte Grierson has an MA in Textiles and is a handweaver with over 20 years of experience. She designs and makes her own functional and art-led work from her studio at Cockpit in Deptford. She also has over 14 years of experience of teaching practical weaving classes.
